Unit Overview

This unit is a combined unit, bringing together the most important points of the unit on the microscope and the unit on the cell, to give students a more complete overview of the function of the microscope in a biological setting. Students will welcome the clear, concise definitions of terms and find the explanations of the processes easy to follow and comprehend. Each of the 12 exercises is designed to familiarize the students with the concepts introduced in this unit. Seven of the exercises deal with the microscope. Those exercises include learning the parts and functions of the microscope; proper use the microscope; focusing; orientation; measurement; and depth of focus. The remaining 5 exercises acquaint students with the structure and function of cells. Students make wet mounts of plant and animal slides as well as review cell models. Each exercise is followed by a series of questions to help students learn how to think critically about biological topics. At the end of the unit, additional questions review the salient points of the unit.

Time Allotment: 2.5 hours
